Sophomore English
Sophomore English is jointly taught with myself and Mrs. Wilke. Sophomore English is split into two sections: Semester One and Semester Two. Semester one is a focus on novel reading both large text in class as well as individual reading novels. Quarter one will be focused on Lord of the Flies by William Golding and a choice dystopian novel read in groups. Sophomores are expected to read the novels assigned to them, but there will be time in class to read them. This said, there may be homework assigned for either novel. Quarter two will focus on The Tempest, a play by William Shakespeare. The second semester is an entire unit on speech writing and delivery, and students will be expected to both write their own speeches as well as speak in front of the class.
Accelerated Sophomore English
Accelerated Sophomore English has a heavy focus on critical analysis and is also split into two sections: Semester One and Semester Two. Semester one starts with an analysis of Twelfth Night, a Comedy play written by William Shakespeare. This coincides with a school field trip to Spring Green to see Twelfth Night performed (americanplayers.org/plays/twelfth-night). Admission to the play is not required, but is highly recommended. Tickets are being sold by Mrs. Literick and are $35. After Shakespeare, we take a jaunt into Transcendentalism where we will read various texts by some of the Transcendentalists, including Walden, Self-Reliance, Leaves of Grass, and various poems by Emily Dickinson, while also journaling for themselves about nature and the world around them. The second semester is an entire unit on speech writing and delivery, and students will be expected to both write their own speeches as well as speak in front of the class. Students will also be expected to read a choice novel with which to read and give a speech for.
Senior English
Senior English is a thematic class focusing on British literature. We'll start with Beowulf before moving on to Canterbury Tales, Macbeth, Paradise Lost, various Romantic poems and choice short stories and poems from Victorian literature. Students will also have one unit in Quarter three that will focus on skills needed for students beyond high school, and will give students an exploration in their options beyond. Budgeting will be involved as well as various documents students will need to be aware of going into the real world, and they will be given time to create resumes and cover letters, apply for scholarships and research the best options for them. Students will also be given a mock interview which will be part of their grade as well.
